"We have to get off coal and oil. It's a no-brainer."

Many people want facts that fit their beliefs. Don Siegel has little patience for such people.

Don's profession is to discover facts about water and rocks—and to make sense out of these facts. This allows him to talk about local shale gas with some authority. He has friends who oppose exploration for natural gas; some, he thinks, may be quick with lawsuits to "protect" the environment.  All he asks is that they keep open minds, and think about the facts. For example, Syracuse fills some of its energy needs by burning coal—which generates huge amounts of greenhouse gas and toxins, not to mention the coal that must be dug just to keep the power plant running. To see shale gas rigs in perspective, he suggests that his friends visit a mountaintop removal coal mine.
